Property Law

Property law is an area of law dealing with the ownership or transfer of property, both personal (i.e., movable things like furniture and clothes) and real (i.e., immovable things like buildings and land). It is established by historical common law and written laws used to clarify certain aspects of property rights.

Property law can include transfer of ownership, property loss, leases and contractual rights. However, this is not an exhaustive listing. Property law also has overlap into personal rights cases as well as ownership. Property law can also apply to a person’s reputation, if commercially valuable, or artistic creations. This form of property law generally falls under intellectual property.
